As part of the Gloiria, the angels and seraphim that hovered over and around the presepio were integral to its overall composition. The seraphim were originally intended to be clustered together in a frenzied clutch. The largest seraphim bears great similarity in the waves of curly hair, puckered lips and shoulderless wings of another sold Semenzato, Rome, 1 December 1999, part lot 368. Another seraphim sold Sotheby's London, 15 December 1999, part lot 150, is almost identical in modelling and pose to the smallest seraphim in the current lot.
