Lot Essay

The two Oriental members of the Magi's train are close to those by Lorenzo Mosca for their more Asiatic appearance. A good comparison can be made with another Oriental attributed to Mosca sold Christie's Milan, 25 November 1999, lot 264. Likewise, the large figure of a Moor also relates to Mosca's ouevre, in its broad features, full lips and highly individualized physiognomy. Compare with two Moorish porters attributed to Mosca that sold Semenzato, Rome, 1 December 1999, lot 380, as well as those illustrated in F. Mancici, Ibid, figs. 47-58.
