Lot Essay

The figure of a townsman can be associated with the large figure of a townsman in blue and red silk costume in lot (mss.20), which together relate to one with similiar pose, dress and facial type from the 19th Century sold Christie's Milan, 25 November 1999, lot 292. Likewise, the figure of the merchant relates, along with the figure of a townsman in lot (mss 13), to other figures by Lorenzo Mosca and his circle. While the figure of the 'Angry Man' is difficult to attribute at this point, caricatures of this type recure often in other presepe, as in the one sold Semenzato, Rome, 1 December 1999, lot 214, that was attributed to Francesco Celebrano (1729-1814).
