The distinctive marquetry of a ribbon-tied quiver and torch trophy and scrolling rinceau foliage on this commode is characteristic of the work of the celebrated Milanese ebanista, Giuseppe Maggiolini, (1738-1814) Intarsiatore delle Loro Altezze Reali. (see G. Beretti, Giuseppe Maggiolini, Milan, 1994.) A closely related commode but with variations to the scrolled foliage and with a medallion to the top was sold in these Rooms, 29 September 1999, lot 269 ($29,900).
