Lot Essay

The stamp of a U beneath a closed crown which is found on these armchairs is possibly the inventory stamp of King Umberto I (d. 1900) or II (d. 1983) of Italy. Umberto I, duke of Savoy and king of Italy ascended the throne in 1878. Umberto II was briefly king of Italy in 1946 until he was forced to abdicate when the Italian people voted for a republican form of government.
