Lot Essay

Johann Joachim Kaendler created the model for this vase, called the schneeballbltenvase, about 1740. The present vases are without the balls of flowers and the birds perched on branches that normally adorn the surface as illustrated in Otta Walcha, Meisener Porzellan, Dresden, 1973, fig. 100, Porzellansammlung, Dresden, and in Meissener Porzellan, 1710-1810, Munich, 1966, pp. 140, 157, figs. 676-78, Residenzmuseum, Munich; in the latter are also illustrated (pp. 140, 157, figs. 672-74, also Residenzmuseum, Munich) the deluxe version of this model with a pierced trellis work knop, like a cage, inhabited by birds. The form of the hu underlies this type of vase, infusing with a Chinese spirit this example of pure rococo fancy.
