Lot Essay

The water-lens was a means of concentrating the rather feeble light of a candle or oil-lamp, the sphere being filled with water and placed between the light source and the object to be illuminated. See Ritsema van Eck/Zijlstra-Zweens 1993, p. 187, no. 298.
