A BLACK LACQUER WRITING BOX, SUZURIBAKO
edo period, 18th century
Of rectangular shape with rounded corners, the lid decorated with fruiting gourd vines in gold lacquer and mother of pearl inlay, the sides worked with songbirds perched on blossoming branches, the red interior fitted with an inset shelf above an octagonal inkstone carved in relief with fruiting gourd vines and a cloisonne quatrefoil form mizuire, ivory mounted brushes, with fitted outer box
10¼ in. (26.0 cm.)long, 8½ in. (21.6 cm.) wide, 4 in. (10.1 cm. ) high.
