A Dutch burr-walnut longcase clock
The movement by Jan Bernink (1735-1795), Amsterdam, circa 1780
The scally-banded case with bombé plinth and canted angles, on hairy claw-and-ball feet, the rectangular trunk door with hollowed corners and a glazed lenticle with gilt-metal mount depicting Europa and the bull, the hood with turned columns with gilt-metal capitals, sound frets to the frieze and sides and an acanthus clasp, the concave moulded caddy-top lacking figural finials, the dial signed Jan Bernink/Amsterdam on the silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic chapters, pierced black painted steel hands, the matted and engraved centre with silvered seconds ring, month and weekday sectors and with rolling moonphase, above a painted dial decorated with Jupiter and Neptune flanking the date aperture, above an automaton with sailing vessels and a seamonster, the five pillar movement with anchor escapement and Dutch strike on two bells, restorations, lacking figural finials
