Lot Essay

A related lantern with palm-flowered cornice, and pierced apron frieze, although with more massive components, was supplied by William Collins in 1832 for Burton Constable, Yorkshire (Temple Newsam House, Country House Studies, No. 4, Country House Lighting, 1992, p. 73, fig. 35). The pierced anthemion cresting motif, supported by scrolling foliage, appears on a Regency ormolu hall lantern, sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 17 November 1994, lot 81.
