Lot Essay

The top, with indented corners, is embellished with ribbon scrolls and a central compartment with a quatrefoil of Roman acanthus festooned with flowers issuing from tied acanthus scrolls in the spandrels.
A shell cartouche embellishes the apron beneath large acanthus, which alternates with ribbon-tied husks on the hollowed frieze and wraps the legs and involuted feet.
The frieze ornament relates to that on a table attributed to John Belchier at Erddig, North Wales (see O. Garnett, Erddig, London, l995, p. l0) and is similar to that on a table sold by Michael Tree, Esq., in these Rooms, 4 July l996, lot 296.
