Lot Essay
The herm-legged settee, with palms flowering the cippi crestings, arms and trussed brackets, reflects the antique fashion promoted by George Smith's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1826; while the armorials are displayed in cusped tablets in the old English or Gothic manner. The Grecian acroteria relate to those on the hall chairs designed in 1810 by Jeffry Wyatt (d. 1840) (Sir Jeffry Wyattville), for Endsleigh, Devon (D. Jarold, Woburn Abbey, Norwich, 1995, p. 9).
