Lot Essay

This scene is probably taken from engravings based on 17th Century paintings in the style of David Teniers (1610-1690), Jan van Almeloveen (1652-1680), or Allaert van Everdingen (1621-1675). Landscapes by such artists illustrating peasant life in the 17th Century were copied in the late 18th Century by Chinese artists painting on reverse glass, and are in the main of this size. Compare the reverse glass painting of this type sold in these Rooms, 28 April 1999, lot 56.
