Lot Essay

See Maura Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain, 1989, pp.76-78 for a discussion on dishes with this design, where the author explains that although this central and border design does exist in Kraak porcelain, of which four examples are known to her (one in the Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves, Lisbon illustrated by Rinaldi as pl.52, one in the Museo degli Argenti, Florence, and two in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), many versions are not strictly Kraak porcelain, especially the large dishes with straight rim. There are several dishes similar to the present lot in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, some of which are illustrated by Regina Krahl, Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, A Complete Catalogue, 1986, vol.II, nos.1121, 1121 a-c, 1122. Compare also the similar dish in the Museum of Anastácio Gonçalves, Lisbon, illustrated by Maria A. Pinto de Matos, Chinese Export Porcelain, 1996, no.28, p.86, together with the smaller Kraak dish as no. 29.
