A VERY RARE FAMILLE ROSE PLATE
circa 1730-1740
Decorated at the centre in an oval panel in gilt and en grisaille with a European figure on horseback killing a serpent coiled around the base of a tree, a Buddhist figure is seated on the tree beside three fleurs-de-lys, a cross with smaller crosses in a panel above, all within a richly enamelled scrolling foliage border and a narrow gilt band of foliage at the rim, restored
9 in. (23 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This design appears to be unrecorded. It may have been made for a religious order, possibly active in the colonies. The fleur-de-lys and arrangement of crosses might suggest a French, Florentine or Portuguese order.
