Lot Essay

The Chinese version of these mugs was inspired by Chelsea and Derby examples. Compare the almost identical Chinese mug from the Essayan Collection, Lisbon, illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, 1962, fig.21, p.44; and another, from the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, 1978, vol.II, no.591, p.570, together with a Derby example of a similar date.
