Lot Essay

This service was inspired by a Meissen pattern of 1757, but the inspiration of the cartouches with all different vignettes and mottos is unknown. A very large part of this service was owned by Major General Sir George Burns, and was sold at his home, North Mymms Park, Christie's, 24 September 1979, lots 743-801. He may well have inherited the service from his great-uncle, Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan. A strainer and dish from this service is in the Hodroff Collection, and is illustrated by David S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, 1994, no.139, pp.132 and 133.
