Portrait of Butch Cassidy

Robert LeRoy Parker was born in 1866 in Beaver, Utah. He spent his early years rustling cattle throughout Utah and Wyoming, becoming accustomed to the life of an outlaw. After a two year sentence in the Wyoming State penitentiary in 1894, Parker changed his name to Butch Cassidy and formed the notorious "Wild Bunch" gang with his close friend Harry Longabaugh (the Sundance Kid.) Cassidy and his men spent the following years robbing banks and trains. The first and only photograph of the gang, taken in 1902 in Fort Worth, Texas, revealed the identity of Butch Cassidy to the public. Now forced to evade the law, Butch, Sundance and his girlfriend Etta Place fled to Argentina where they lived for several years. In 1907, Butch and Sundance met their end in the small village of San Vincente in Bolivia.

This extremely rare tintype of Butch Cassidy is believed to have been taken in the early to mid 1890s.
