Lot Essay

The original marble vase, now in the Glasgow museum, was discovered in 1771 and puchased by The Earl of Warwick from Sir William Hamilton. For many years Warwick prohibited casts to be taken from the vase, copies instead being executed from prints published by Piranesi.
