Lot Essay

The romantic ruins of Holyrood Abbey stand adjacent to the Palace of Holyrood House. The monastery of Holy Rood was founded in 1128 by King David I of Scotland. Over the years the Augustinian abbey has had a turbulent history and witnessed many historic events. It saw the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots in 1565 and the coronation of King Charles I in 1633.

During the Reformation the building was extensively damaged. A new roof was completed in 1758 but ten years later it collapsed and the building has remained a ruin ever since.
