Lot Essay

The present watercolour is inspired by a Turner watercolour in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (see A. Wilton, The Life and Work of J.M.W. Turner, London and Fribourg, 1979, no. 406). Based on a sketch made in 1802 (TB LXXXIX-E), Turner's watercolour was executed in 1831-2 and engraved by J.B. Allen for The Keepsake in 1833. It originally belonged to John Ruskin, and it is possible that Goodwin saw it in his collection.
