Lot Essay

The Lipari Islands are also known as the Aeolian Islands as, according to classical mythology, they were inhabited by Aeolus, god of the winds (see also lot 8). The archipelago comprises seven main islands: Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea.

The islands are volcanic, wild and rugged. Stromboli, the northernmost island, has frequent minor eruptions and accompanying flows of lava. The island is famous for its black beaches and its Moorish-style houses.
