Lot Essay

Having given up his fellowship at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and made the decision to become a professional painter, Hunt went to live in Durham, his wife's native city. He lived there from 1852 to 1865 and returned on a number of occasions throughout his life to paint the city. Durham was in fact one of Hunt's favourite subjects.
