Lot Essay

This view in the Alps was painted by Turner on several occasions following his visit to France and Switzerland in 1802. The dramatic scenery of the Alps appealed to artists interested in the serious aspects of nature and the fashion for the sublime. A pen and wash version, now in the British Museum was produced for the Liber Studiorum, in 1819, but remained unpublished. For another version of this subject by Turner see M. Butlin and E. Joll, The Paintings of J.M.W. Turner, London, 1984, no. 147, pl. 154.
