Lot Essay

Turner's painting: Sun rising through vapour: Fishermen cleaning and selling fish was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807 and appears to have been a favourite of both Turner and Brabazon. Brabazon painted another larger study of this picture, and Turner paid a considerable amount more than he sold it for to buy the picture back to leave to the nation. It is now in the Tate Gallery, no. 479. The strong sweep of red paint in the foreground represents the spilled fish from the day's catch.
