The Mosque of Amr was the earliest Islamic building in Egypt. Originally built in 641 by 'Amr ibn al'-As, the leader of an invading Arab army. The mosque was built at Al-Fustat, a city that grew out of the Arab army's encampment on the site of the present day Cairo.
Destroyed, rebuilt and restored often, the present Mosque is a nineteenth-century re-construction that still preserves design elements and ornamental work from the various periods of the buildings history.
