Lot Essay

It is a curious feature of this painting that the head of the Emperor appears to have been inserted later into the painting. It is possible that the original sitter was another man as the picture dates from the period of accession struggle which followed Aurangzeb's death. Azam Shah reigned briefly for 3 months and 10 days.
