Lot Essay
The present kelleh is closer in drawing than the previous lot to the original vase carpets. An even earlier example, of similar proportion, but dating from the first half of the 18th century, is in the Glencairn Museum, Academy of the New Church, Bryn Athyn (Dodds, Dennis R. and Eiland, Murray L.Jr.: Oriental Rugs from Atlantic Collections, Philadelphia, 1996, no.63, p.63). For a discussion of the Kurdish rugs of this period, see Levi, Alberto: 'Renewal and Innovation, Iconographic Influences on Kurdish Carpet design' Hali 70, August/September 1993, pp.85-93.
