Lot Essay

A contemporary version of the prototype in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. 1159), for which there is a drawing in the Kunstmuseum, Dsseldorf. It is possible that the National Gallery picture and its pair (inv. no. 1131) were the canvasses for which Dughet was paid by Prince Colonna in February 1660.
