Lot Essay

The present picture is a testament to the trip made by the artist in 1781 to Lake Albano via the Appian Way. It relates closely to two drawings made by Hackert on the same journey (op. cit., cat. no. 778 and 779). On the right, can be seen the ruins of the Villa Quintili whose water was supplied by the acquaduct beyond.
