Lot Essay

A preparatory drawing in red chalk and squared for transfer for this hitherto unpublished picture, is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (fig.; see H. Jedding, Johann Heinrich Roos. Werke einer Pfälzer Tiermalerfamilie in den Galerien Europas, Mainz, 1998, p. 215, fig. 304). The drawing is inscribed by the artist 'In Tivoli - dipinto in grande quanto che il vero di mesura di palmi otto ed dodici - nel anno 1696 io Fillippo Pietro Rosa'. Dr. Hermann Jedding points out that this is the only known preparatory drawing in the oeuvre of Philipp Peter Roos that can be connected to a picture (letter 29 February 2000).

Dr. Jedding also confirms the hypothesis that this and the previous lot were probably part of a decorative cycle to which two pictures in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and two more in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Kassel also belong (ibid., figs. 305-308). Not only are these six pictures the only ones known with exactly the same measurements but they also are very close in style and subject.

We are grateful to Dr. Hermann Jedding for his assistance in cataloguing these pictures.
