Guillaume Noël was active at Sèvres 1755-1805.

The decoration on the present cup and saucer may be that referred to in factory archives as frizes riches.

Cf. Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection: Catalogue of the Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. II, no. 441 for a cup and socketed saucer in the Wallace Collection dated 1764 and painted by Noël using the same palette and the same gilt dash on a blue ground; also no. 439 for a two-handled gobelet à lait et soucoupe dated 1766 and painted by Noël with the same pattern and palette as the present example but with gilt seeds replacing the dashes and with minor variations in the colour scheme
