The following 13 lots were acquired by the painted J. Stewart Barney (1868-1925), during his visits to Paris in the late 1880's and 1890's. From a promiment New York family, Barney assembled the objects together in a "Napoleonic" drawing room in his Upper East Side townhouse where they have remained until their removal for sale by Barney's descendants. The collection constitutes a remarkable example of American taste for the Empire style at the end of the 19th century.
