Lot Essay

This commode bears several distinctive features of Nicolas Petit's work. The inlay of floral sprays and trophies within reserves can be found on other commodes by Petit of this period and were used by Petit throughout his career, including one illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siecle, 1989, p. 643, and another was sold Sotheby's Monaco, 21 February 1988, lot 791. Another distinctive feature of Petit's work shared by this commode is the classical mounts of ribbon tied laurel wreaths (see P. Kjellberg, op. cit., p. 644-647).
