The enamel dial with roman and arabic chapters surmounted by a figure of the infant Hercules, above a lambrequin-draped Nemean lion on a plinth cast with leaves and rocks with a ribbon-tied berried laurel border on a marble base with entrelac panels and rosettes, on toupie feet (movement of later date)--13in. (33cm.) high, 10in. (25.5cm.) wide, 4½in. (11.5cm.) deep

The offered lot, with its figure of the infant Hercules astride a lion relates to numerous similar models popular in the 1770's designed by dessinateurs and doreurs cisceleurs François Vion, Pierre-Antoine Foullet, and LeDuc (see H. Ottomeyer, and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, pls. 3.11.3-6).
