With skeletonized nickel-finished lever movement, 36 jewels, 21K gold rim to the rotor, the rim with engraved inscription 1594 Gerard Mercator 1994, the silvered dial depicting the map of the Americas, the silvered hands placed on twelve and depicting compass legs to resemble the early hand-held compasses as used by Gerardus Mercator, both moving in an arch over the two curved sectors graduated for hours and minutes with Arabic numerals, returning to zero after each course respectively after twelve hours and sixty minutes, the circular case with stepped bezel and lugs, glazed snap on back, together with an 18K white gold Vacheron & Constantin hidden clasp, Vacheron & Constantin black leather pouch, case, dial and movement signed

Lot Essay

The Mercator model was introduced in 1994 to commemorate the famous cartographer and humanist Gerardus Mercator on the 400th anniversary of his death.

The same model, but with the dial depicting the map of Asia, sold in this saleroom on 20 October 1999 for US$ 23,000 (lot 214).
