Lot Essay
The deep relief-carved foliage on the frames of the offered lot characterizes the stylistic progression from flat rocaille ornament typical of South German seat furniture in the 1740's to the more sculptural quality of the 1750's. An Armlehnsessel of similarly broad proportions and related sculptural foliate carving is at Schloss Nymphenburg; another similar armchair is at the Residenz, Munich (see H. Kriesel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, 1970, vol. II, p. 178, figs. 457, 458).
