This carpet most likely commemorates the elevation of the George V to the prince of Wales in 1901, after his father's, Edward VII, accession to the throne. George, prince of Wales was married to Princess May of Teck, later Queen Mary, in 1893, following the death of his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor who had been engaged to marry Princess May. Queen Mary, was widely known as both an avid collector and an embroiderer herself and it is possible that she was involved in the creation of carpet offered here.
