K2 Expedition [1902]
Sixty Verascope Richard (stereoscope) sepia positive glass slides in three boxes numbered I, III, and IV, the slides all inscribed and numbered
each 1¼ x 4¼in. (4.4 x 10.7cm.)
The photographs were taken on Oscar Eckenstein's international K2 expedition of 1902. The expedition, which included the Swiss Dr. Jacot Guillarmod, the Austrian mountaineers Heinrich Pflannl and Victor Wesseley, and the notorious Aleister Crowley, attempted the North-East Ridge, ascending to 6525m. This was one of the very first attempts on K2, following its first reconnaisance by Robert Lerco in 1890 and William Martin Conway's British expedition (which reached 6890m.) in 1892. The first successful ascent of K2 was made by two Italians on Ardito Desio's Italian expedition in 1954.
