Alexander Philipp Maximilian, Prinz zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867)

Reise in das innere Nord-Amerika in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834. Coblenz: by Dubois and Werle for J. Hoelscher, 1839-1841. 3 volumes (of 4, lacking the volume of 48 large plates), 4° (350 x 253, volumes I-II) and oblong 2° (28.5 x 41.5cm., plate volume). Letterpress titles and half-titles in volumes I and II. Engraved plan of Fort William stamped by Karl Bodmer, 33 etched and engraved 'vignette' plates by J. Outhwaite, C. Vogel, L. Weber and others after Bodmer, all stamped by Bodmer, some in aquatint, lithographic key-plate by F.J. Steiner, lithographic temperature chart by F.J. Steiner after H. Mädler, woodcut illustrations and plans in the text. (Scattered spotting, some leaves, plates and gatherings a little browned, a few plates lightly stained.) Contemporary German half-sheep over marbled boards, spines gilt, gilt black calf lettering-pieces on spines of text volumes and upper board of plate volume, green edges (extremities and boards lightly rubbed, stamps erased from spines, neat restoration to lettering-pieces of text volumes). Provenance: Erbach-Schönbergische Bibliothek (bookplate); Dr Herbert Tischner (bookplate). First edition of this 'bel ouvrage' (Brunet), which offers a comprehensive survey of all aspects of North America, with appendices which include a 190-page vocabulary and glossary of Amerindian languages (II, pp.455-465). Howes notes that the key-plate and temperature chart 'were probably sent to subscribers, after pub[lication]., to be inserted [... and] are frequently lacking'. Of the map, he notes that it was 'completed after the German ed[ition]. was pub[lished]. [and] is found inserted in the Atlas', as was probably the case with the title page to the plates and map in this set, both of which are lacking. Brunet III, 1551; Howes 443a; Sabin 47014. (3)
