British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904
J.D. MORRISON. Four 'Antarctic Club' Christmas cards, [n.d]-1934, 1936. 15.4 x 10.1cm., each with seasonal greetings printed in blue, facing a mounted machine-print photograph after Herbert Ponting and others, one signed, three signed and inscribed by Morrison. The outer thin card covers with the embossed crest of the Antarctic Club printed in silver, blue ribbon ties (one tie lacking). Provenance: J.D.Morrison (inscriptions, one addressed to 'Mr & Mrs Ferrier'?).
[With:]
An original watercolour, titled "Triumph of Machinery", [January-February 1904], 35.3 x 24.9cm., showing the giant figure of Morrison(?), dressed in stylised polar clothing, holding a spear with a sledging flag attached, watching over the eruption of Mt. Erebus, with three ships anchored at the volcano's base (Terra Nova, Discovery and Morning), above the title and a presentation inscription 'We, thy loyal and admiring subjects, do hereby present you on this thy natal day - this small token of esteem and symbol of our gratitude, as a feeble but yet heart-felt expression of the extraordinary enthusiasm which thy wonderful efforts and omnipotent kindness have elicited or awakened in the minds of thousands throughout the length and breadth of Antarctica', all within a painted black border. (Creased, some surface loss to paint and small holes).
Morrison was chief engineer of the Morning during her relief voyages to the Antarctic in 1903 and 1904, and would probably have been invited to join the Antarctic Club at its inception in 1929. The watercolour is by an amateur hand, possibly one of the officers aboard the Morning, and the combination of the figure's resemblance to Morrison with the title do suggest him as a possible recipient. The presence of all three ships suggests the date of January-February 1904, when the Morning accompanied by the Terra Nova returned to the Discovery for the second time, and helped free her from the pack ice.
