Lot Essay

Shackleton was relying on ponies and motor-transport to take him to the Pole on the Nimrod expedition. 'Nine sledge dogs, meanwhile, descendants of Borchgrevink's dogs, left behind in 1900 and acquired in New Zealand as an afterthought' (R. Huntford, Shackleton, London, 1985, p.198) accompanied the expedition.
