A reminder of one of the honours conferred on Shackleton shortly after his return from the Nimrod expedition. He reached London on 14 June 1909: 'Two days after his arrival in England he received a letter from the Secretary of Trinity House. The Court of this ancient and distinguished corporation had decided to ask him if he would consent to be elected a Younger Brother of the Corporation, in recognition of 'the very distinguished services which you have rendered to the cause of science and Navigation by your last successful voyage in the "Nimrod" to the Antarctic regions'. This honour, so appropriate to Shackleton, had only been given once before' (M. & J. Fisher, Shackleton, London, 1954, p.263). The present work recalls Shackleton's acceptance of the proposed honour.
