British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
Robert Falcon SCOTT (1868-1912). - An irreguarly-shaped fragment formed from two joined pieces of black rubberised-cotton cloth from Scott's naval overcoat [1910], 35 x 46cm. approximately, with the seam covered with a third thin strip of rubberised material, with two black composition buttons with metal fixings, the seam-covering with hand-painted inscription in white 'Capt. R.F. Scott. R.N.'.
Provenance: Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912); Thomas Withers (by descent).
Thomas Withers, the grandfather of the present owner, was in charge of the group of men in Cardiff who were charged with unloading and shipping the contents of the Terra Nova after her return in June 1913. Family tradition relates that the overcoat was given to Withers by Commander Evans.
