British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
Edward Leicester ATKINSON (1882-1929). - S.S. Terra Nova R.Y.S. A Sherwood Linley Limited brass cylinder ship's lantern, Birmingham, [1910 or earlier], 23.5cm. high (including handle), with arched swing carrying-handle, bell-shaped screw-top ventilator, above a glazed, hinged door enclosing a brass burner with white porcelain wick holder, inscribed with manufacturer's name and 'Trade Mark Sound' on one side and 'Vaporite' on the reverse.
Provenance: Edward Atkinson (gift to second wife:); Mary Atkinson (née Hunter); by descent.
Atkinson retained the present lamp as a memento of his time aboard the Terra Nova.
