British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
William LASHLY (1868-1940). - A varnished pine coal/log box, [New Zealand: November 1910], 41cm. high (including handle, 36cm. wide, 41cm. deep, the hinged sloping lid with incised roundel carved in shallow relief with a penguin standing on a globe, with surrounding inscription 'British Antarctic Expedition Terra Nova R.Y.S.', the top with black-painted arched carrying handle and two strapwork hinges.
Provenance: Terra Nova R.Y.S.; William Lashly (by descent to:); Alice Lashly (his daughter, gift to:); Mrs.Thomas (by descent).
According to Alice Lashly, the coal or log box was made by an expedition member when the Terra Nova was in dry dock in Lyttelton, New Zealand, during October and November 1910, before the expedition's final departure for the south at the end of November. The box was apparently constructed from off-cuts of local timber used to effect repairs and improvements to the ship.
