Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917
Sir Ernest Henry SHACKLETON (1874-1922) and Frank WORSLEY (1874-1939). - A 4pp. thin-card menu of a Lunch/given in honour of/Sir E.Shackleton/Lima,/19th October 1916 held at the Restaurant del Parque Zoologico, 15.8 x 8.7cm., printed in blue, titled on first page, second page blank, but signed in pencil by Shackleton and Worsley, third page with menu, fourth page with restaurant name.
This menu recalls the end of the period when the Endurance crew as a whole were feted in South America. By the end of September most of the men had been begun to make their way home. Shackleton still had the fate of the Ross Sea Party to worry about and he headed north from Buenos Aires on the steamship Imperial calling in at Lima on his way to Panama and a ship sailing for New Zealand. Throughout this period Shackleton clearly found it difficult to equate what he saw as the failure of the expedition with the honours that were being heaped upon him: in a letter, dated 23rd October 1916, Shackleton wrote to his wife of his reception in Chile, that he had been entertained 'as if I had made a triumph instead of the Expedition having failed'.
