CONDRIEU
There is a certain irony presented by Coindrieu. The town of Condrieu itself is a beautiful village sitting on a bend in the Rhone River--the name 'Condrieu' is itself derived from this fact, being a cognate of the phrase 'Coin du Ruisseau,' 'corner of the stream'. The appellation itself extends from Condrieu south through the communes of Verin, St-Michel-sur-Rhone, St-Pierre-de-Boeuf, Chavanay, Malleval and Limony. Irony presents itself in the fact that cultivating the vine in this pastoral setting is as treacherous as the river is calm; the slopes upon which grapes can be grown are steep and the topsoil is terribly slippery given its composition of schist, mica and decomposed rock. To make matters even more precarious, the winters are cold and the summers horribly hot. Hence, grape growing in Condrieu is something which requires an enormous amount of passion.

Adding to the difficulty is the fact that Condrieu is entirely composed of Viognier. Why, then do people grow it, particularly in such difficult circumstances? Certainly this question can only be answered by a glass of Condrieu. Beautifully golden/straw in color, with ethereal floral and earthen aromas and flamboyant flavors, Condrieu is the wine world's equivalent of Mahler symphonies: delicate, though at times bold and structured.

Today Condrieu is produced in a several of styles ranging from the delicate to the bold. Zachys/Christie's is privileged to offer a variety of these rare and unique wines in several styles and vintages from some of the most noted producers. It is our belief that Condrieu is one of the most enchanting wines in the world, and that your first taste of it will surely not be your last. Perhaps the true irony of Condrieu is the pleasure derived from such torment.
