Incomplete holograph manuscript written (mostly in ink) on various 4to size sheets as follows: Manuscript title-page, Introduction (3 pages--complete); Chapter I (5 pages--incomplete); Chapter III (6 pages--incomplete); Chapter V (one page only--incomplete); Chapters VI-IX (36 pages [written in pencil]--incomplete, lacking only some copy behind pages 65, 67-69 of the first edition; Chapter X (8 pages--complete); Chapter XII (2 pages--incomplete); Chapter XIV (3 pages and one page typed manuscript--incomplete); Chapters XV-XVII (25 pages--complete); Chapters XVIII-XX (17 pages with a lacuna from pages 134-140 of the book); Chapters XXII-XXIII (one page each only); Chapter XXIV (5 pages--complete, except for the last quote). Together 113 pages of identifiable manuscript, with hundreds of corrections, deletions, and insertions, including many substantive variants from the printed text. Typescript material includes carbon typescripts for Chapter XVIII (9 pages); Chapter XIX (6 pages); and Chapter XX (14 pages). Together 29 pages of unannotated typescript.

A group of 67 pages of holograph manuscript containing drafts, notes, discarded material, etc. (some of which will undoubtedly fill in a few gaps in the final manuscript).
