Lot Essay
A design for a tub of this form but with cut-corner molded drawers appears in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book of 1767 (L. Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, no.176 and reproduced here). An example with a removable lead-lined draining box fitted in its base drawer is illustrated in R. Butler, Wine Antiques, Woodbridge, 1987, pl.267.
Other examples of this form include two sold by David Style, Esq., Wateringbury Place, Kent, Christie's London, 31 May 1978, lots 232 and 237. Another from the estate of the late Mrs. Stephen P. Farish was sold in these Rooms, 26 January 1990, lot 318 and a further example sold in these Rooms, 25-26 January 2000, lot 620 ($7,475). A final example was sold, the property of a Gentleman, Christie's London, 16 November 1995, lot 55 (£20,700).
